I think the scene in which Arthur was angry and made Lancelot kneel down can be understood as: he was angry at Lancelot’s “dirty fight” trick (they were playing under certain rules, such action was not to be expected). He was probably angry because he was deceived by such a trick, and he was also upset by such unknightly behavior.
But Arthur also knew that in real fight, such reaction is useful. Trick or not, Lancelot has proven that he is an excellent fighter So Arthur would calm himself down and happily introduce Lance to Uther to be knighted.
I think Merlin’s inability to forge a better certificate is understandable. He is a layman in such a world, a manservant. How could he know the origins of all these nobles, let alone how close they were to Uther. And he did not have enough time to think about which one to pick.

I’m starting at the beginning now that I’ve finished listening to (and watching) season 3. What a treat! You two are absolutely hilarious in this episode. All the tangents were delightful.
It’s really amusing to hear you arguing about how to name the List of Destiny, after experiencing it as such an established element of the podcast. And I was tickled by your musings from the previous episode about whether the “lessons” will stick, now that new guidelines are needed to manage the high levels of participation!

I actually thought about the naming process of the list of destiny the other day, and how it was unnamed for ages, and that we named in “on air” hahaha. I occassionally enjoy going back to old episodes, just to check in and see how things have changed and evolved since then 😀

I only just found the podcast and I’m now rewatching the show so I can listen after each episode. I’m only a little disappointed that you didn’t comment on the moment at the celebration where Arthur asks Lancelot “Do you think as beautiful?” and Lancelot says “Yes, Sire I do” and you see that Lancelot is looking at Gwen but Arthur is looking at Morgana and he says “Yeah. I suppose she is.” While I was watching it I was curious about what you would say about that. Also, I’m so smitten with Morgana it’s ridiculous 😂

aww, I’m sorry!! I know absolutely the scene you mean, and I can hear their delivery and everything, but I’m trying to remember where on the ‘will they, won’t they’ arc that episode falls… And I feel it’s towards the ‘won’t they’, because that entire episode is really just about Morgana using her status to taunt Arthur, and Arthur playing the game of wanting to be the best and wanting to win her hand, but not because he actually wants it… I must say, I love Morgana (and Arthur) the most, when they are being proper annoyed with each other siblings, rather than potential love interests.
What did you think of the scene?

Right now at this point I’m in season 2 and I can say that I prefer the teasing sibling relationship over the potential romantic relationship they flirted with in the earlier episodes. Though, at the time I didn’t mind it as much because I didn’t know where it was going and how could you not have been enamored by Morgana? Looking back I feel like maybe he should’ve been looking at Gwen like Lancelot did so we already would’ve had the beginning of the Arthur-Lancelot-Gwen love triangle because it really didn’t last very long.

I feel they did themselves a disservice by not planning more for the future. It was one of the interesting things that came out of our interview with bradley, where I asked him how much they as actors knew of the story of the show, and he said they were given the first three scripts and everything else he just assumed via his knowledge of the legends. which is unfortunately quite often how the show feels. that they lay groundwork for something they then don’t follow through, and completely change their mind about something, or get half way into a season only to go ‘OMG what if we did….’ and change track. a showrunner with a much clearer overview and vision for the full story would have made a lot of difference to Merlin I feel.
