Pandemonium Con 1 – Parabatai Panel

It is safe to say that the Parabatai Panel was an absolute highlight of the weekend. Getting Matt and Dom in a room together and seeing their infamous chemistry first hand was delightful! They are so very fond of each other and have perfected a double act that relies on teasing insults but is interrupted every five minutes because one of them has made the other one laugh so much your stomach hurts just watching them.

It is safe to say that no one left the room without at least a bit of a twinge in their diaphragm from laughing at their antics, so we will do our best to recall them for you.

In no particular order and with no semblance of structure… here we go!

Have you kept anything from the set?

M: (offended tone) The answer is no. We have not kept anything. We would never take things from the set. That would be inappropriate. It would be theft. It would be stealing!

D: I mean, I used a very distinctive sword for the entirety of Shadowhunters. (mischievous, satisfied voice)  I have it! (pauses to thinks, looking around the room) OH! And these! (points at the boots he’s wearing) these are Jace’s

M: Occasionally some boots. Nothing else..

D: Yeah… They said… I mean… I… Nobody is filming this, right? Right?

(laughter. audience assured him that no. Matt points out that there is always someone filming)

M: I didn’t get to keep my bow. I know it was auctioned off to somebody like this. (finger snap) That was very sudden. (Audience coos) no big deal! Whatever! I’m over it!

D: You bought it, didn’t you?

M: No. (pouts)

What is your favourite memory together?

(Audience awws)

M: Actually I’ve been working on this thing where my memory only goes back 2 weeks. Life is very simple that way. I noticed because fish never look unhappy. (Dom protest that they do) They don’t! They just look confused. So I stopped having those memories, I just got rid of them. But if I did hypothetically have a positive memory of this guy, it would be when I first realised that working with him wasn’t going to be a complete pain in the arse, which is a nice way of saying when I realised he could be my friend

(audience awws)

M: COULD be.

D: It’s a trial period for 2 weeks. A friendship trial.

M: Well I don’t remember what you’ve done so..

D: That’s the thing, we had to re-meet when we first got here today. (Matt impression) I don’t remember you, what’s your name?

D: Mine might be this exact moment because I think it’s the first time you called me your friend…

M: Tentative friend!

D: Tentative, yes. I might have just ruined it for myself…

They get asked if there are any Parabatai moments in 3b that we can look forward to and Matt starts talking tentatively and Dom interrupts, because spoilers. They confer behind cupped hands (which they have done a lot in recent convention circuits. Not sure how good they think our lipreading is, but clearly they think quite highly of our skills!)

They conclude that yes, there are some. Dom mentions a moment in Matt’s office that’s a big moment.

Can you remember the parabatai oath?

They both hesitate…

M: Actually, here’s a curious thing about the parabatai oath… It’s actually from the bible! It’s sort of an adapted version from the book of…erm.. the book of…

Audience: Ruth

M: The book of Ruth, yes. I thought that was an interesting thing that I hadn’t realised in the past…

D: So…?

M: I can’t do the thing. I only have a two week memory! Do you want me to look it up?

D: Entreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee.. (Audience whoops and cheers) and.. the rest..

M/D: Where thou goest I will go and where thou lodgest I will lodge. Erm…

M: For ever and ever and ever

Audience yells: Thy people

D: Thy people shall me my people and thy god, my god… next?

Audience: Where thou leadest

D: Yeah, that’s right! Where thou… thoust?

M: I don’t know. There’s a lot of thoust and all that. I do like it! I just don’t remember it!

Audience: Just do the short version!

D: (outraged) There’s a short version??

M: There’s an extended version?!?

D: We’ve been doing these conventions, Matt and I together in a lot of these panels, for about two years. And this question comes up all the time, and we still haven’t made the effort.. to even put it on our hands, so we could just read it. We should just do that! Next time, we should do that..

M: I mean.. If it will make you happy.

D: And there will I be buried, the angel do so to me, and more also, if aught but death part thee and me. Thank you! (cheers) Just kidding! I know it!

Are you a Queen fan?

D: Are you a queen fan? How could you not be a queen fan?

Audience member shouts angrily: VERY EASILY

(Dom and Matt look shocked, try to hide behind their chairs and look about for escape routes)

M: You mean a fan of the queen of England?

Who would be Freddie and…

D: (interrupting enthusiastically) We actually always used to say that you would play a really good Freddie Mercury!

M: That’s completely false.. I don’t have the voice, the performing chops..

D: That’s not true! I think you’d be good at it!

M: I’m also about a foot too tall.

D: I think Matt would do a good job, Matt thinks Matt would not do a good job

Audience: I think you’d be like Brian May and you could be like Roger

D: Oooh, yeah. And Harry could be Freddy

M: He’s got moves baby!

Who are your favourite members of the cast to do scenes with?

D: (Points at Matt) Two weeks.. he has no memory of filming Shadowhunters..

M: My favourite? I don’t know.. I gotta say Harry. It was also… (Dom pretends to storm off. Matt glances at him with a shrug, before continuing) it was also fun to work with Isaiah. Kat. Emeraude. Alberto.. I don’t really remember anybody else…

Dom pouts. Audience awws

D: I didn’t like working with any of them.

M: There’s your answer. You want the truth… You want it, you got it sister!

How was it being evil in 3a, acting against Clary and all that. Did you enjoy it?

D: Oh yeah! Much easier than pretending to like her! Look, the reality is… you’re talking about the whole owl thing they made me do? They have so much money they could have CGI’ed anything on my face, but they put me in a mask for 6 months. A full face mask.

M: (gleefully) And leather pants

D: Leather pants and a leather jacket. And they would rip. Some of you have heard this story, I was wearing pink briefs… And then I almost drowned! Did you know this Matt? (Matt pretends he has never heard this story) So the mask comes down to my chest and it’s glued on. So the first scene with poor Tim Dempsey, remember the really lovely nurse that we just murder in cold blood? Yeah, him… That mask let’s in water at the top and then not out at the bottom and we are filming this rain scene and I can see water filling up my goggles and I’m like ‘hey guys, I don’t want to be dramatic but I think I’m gonna die so can we stop?’

M: You’re like a sheep..

(long pause)

D: What??

M: You’re just like (gazes at the sky) ‘Oh no, it’s filling up with water and I’m going to die! I have no idea what to do now’ when you could have just.. (gets up, tilts his head upside down and mimes shaking water out)

I was wondering, if this whole actor gig won’t work out for you… (laughter)

D: Mum??

(audience laughs. Matt absolutely cracks up)

D: Sorry, continue..

What other profession would you choose?

D: SPACECOWBOY! I said it first!!

M: Yeah, that’s funny. It’s either spacecowboy or I would start a power washing business. Basically have about 10 – 20 units. High powered gasoline. Hire maybe a crew of about five people. Start sourcing jobs. Outdoor walls. Cement cleaning. Pathways. Driveways. Decks. Walls. Building…

(laughter. Dom looks at Matt, marvelling)

M: It’s true

D: (chuckling fondly) I know!

M: Have you ever power-washed something? (to audience) HAVE YOU EVER POWER WASHED SOMETHING? It is possibly the second best feeling in the world! Second to… erm.. power washing.

D: Imagine power washing and you had two?

M: Two power washers? You’re mad now!

What are your favourite Christmas songs?

M: Silent night. That’s my answer. Silent night. (turns to Dom) Yours?!

D: Wow.. I don’t think I’ve ever been so aggressively asked.. What’s your favourite Christmas song? YOURS? NOW!

M: There’s a right answer

D: There’s a right answer??

M: You don’t want to give the wrong answer…

M: I also like ‘on the first day of Christmas’ (sings a bit of it. Audience cheers! Dom: ‘And you said you can’t sing..’) Don’t encourage him! … Me I mean. I’m him in this scenario.

D: I don’t know what mine is…

M: Jingle bells? Rudolph the red nose reindeer?

D: Ah! Rudolph! The Rudolph one!

M: He’s got a red nose. He does reindeer stuff. Helps with the presents. Cuts through the fog. Useful reindeer..

D: If you don’t ask the next question, he won’t stop!

How will 03×10 affect Alec and Jace?

D: When I was in Australia I gave away a massive thing that happens at the beginning of 3b, so I’m saying nothing..

M: We gotta keep it real mum on this because we have a habit of giving away spoilers because of… because we’re idiots! So I will tell you, that it does have an affect. Because we film literally with a purpose. But honestly it’s less of an effect than you would expect because there’s a lot of stuff. New stuff. Problems. So we move on pretty quick, but you’ll see, don’t worry.

If you could have or be any animal, mythical or real, what would you be?

M: Mythical or real? I would be.. an interplanetary octopus. 8 million miles long. Made of diamonds and gold. With a thousand eyes. And each eye encompasses an entire universe of it’s own. And in each eye, within each of those universes, there’s a million more of me, the same creature, and I exist simultaneously in all those places. And I only eat ice cream. Strawberry flavour.

D: I’d be a puppy.

M: That’s a better choice. Can I go with puppy?

Matt, did you ever break anything while you filmed?

M: I never broke anything once! Ridiculous to even question me. Don’t listen to him. (points at Dom) This guy has this ridiculous story where I broke a sword and the sword broke, yes, but I didn’t break it…

D: That wasn’t even the story I was going to tell, but yes, you did break it

M: I didn’t break it! They said jam the sword into the ground! But it’s the frozen tundra. It’s December in Toronto! There was literally polar bears that were picking off crew members on the outskirts. People were huddling in close for safety.

D: We had a huge turn around on crew

M: It was crazy. In fact, sometimes after a good feeding, we knew we could film the next day because the polar bears were so full, they were laying on their backs, on the outskirts, and we could film.

So I had to plant this sword into the frozen ice, in the dirt and they say, slam it in the ground and I did!

And it breaks in half and they go ‘You broke it!’ And I’m like ‘I literally did what you wanted me to do!’ and they’re blaming me! You see what I mean??

If you could change your signature weapon to any object in the world, what would it be?

D: Any weapon in the world? There are so many better weapons than what we use!

A: Alec said ‘I need a projectile. Well, bows and arrows have pretty much been the primary mode of combat for the last few hundred years. I don’t see anything else going on.’

D: I don’t see anything better. Projectiles haven’t improved in the last 200 years since bow & arrow, that was Alec’s thinking.

M: I don’t like how Luke was just able to shoot everything on the show.. problem solved.. I know why! I get it! I’m just saying we should employ the wolves and arm them! Arm them, seriously! We should have got all these downworlders, armed and trained with weapons.

D: I can’t tell you how many fights I lose in 3b because I turn around and everyone is armed better than me. There’s one where Clary throws me her little knife and I’m like ‘There’s 7 people around me! What am I meant to do with this? I’m not making toast!!’

M: Now if we had a tank…

D: Shadowtank! That would be.. Or a plane?

M: Hot air balloon would work great, too. Throw rocks over the edge. No vampires are getting near there. What are you going to do vampire?

D: There you go! The answer was hot air balloon and rocks. In case anyone in the back didn’t hear? Hot air balloon and rocks. This is why they didn’t let us have a huge amount of input with the scripts.

What’s your favourite city and what would Alec’s favourite city be?

Matt pauses for a long time…

D: London! If he doesn’t say London he’s an idiot. You’re in London. Say London!

M: Yeah. Mine. But Alec.. I don’t know!

D: The reality is if Shadowhunters could go anywhere they wouldn’t go to a city where there’s another institute and shit hitting the fan the whole time. They’d go to a beach town where only five people live. Running into Lilith tanning herself on a beach. We wouldn’t go to cities. They wouldn’t say ‘let’s go to Toronto’ oh, yeah, there’s evil happening here to… great.

M: Where as if we went to Keiko’s (?) institute… Any demons recently?

D: No, not a single one. I’m actually the only shadowhunter here. (both look around themselves) Nothing..

M: Oh. What about… (mimes picking something up. looks at it) Nope. That’s a crab. Looks like a demon but no…

What is your favourite scene you shot together?

(Fan shouts 02×03)

D: It could be…

M: I agree! I think it actually is. The first fightscenes that we did together when we first started the show, for sure that was a great moment. It felt like we were doing something cool and interesting so that was a great start. And then the episode where I get to sleep in bed the whole time and you had to cry a lot. That was great. I loved that. You did great work. And I, I did great also.

D: Yeah. Erm… yeah. YEAH.

How do you feel when people say they found their own Parabatai through the show?

M: It’s something I really like to hear. Sometimes during the autographs someone will say ‘this is for my parabatai who’s not here right now’ and it’s really nice.

D: There’s a real bonding that people have found through this term and this relationship that started as something fictional and then has turned, via the books and the show, into something real for so many people, so it’s lovely!

M: Just quick! For those of you who are doing that thing where you tweet what we say. In the past I have noticed people post things, and they are not really correct.

D: No paraphrasing, team!

M: The paraphrasing is a problem.. you realise the power of those missing words… and I’m like ‘man, that’s not what I said’… Let’s really work on that skill! (laughs) You guys are doing great! Great work!

Host interrupts to send people to Isaiah auto

Host: No one is moving.. why is no one moving?

D: It doesn’t get more entertaining than this. It’s the same amount of idiocy. I would go and see Isaiah if I were you

M: I mean, I can be even dumber…

If Shadowhunters was a musical, what would your theme song be and could you sing a bit for us?

M: I love that your under the impression – which I do appreciate – that we are capable, currently, of creating a song of tremendous talent, and wit.. which we are by the way! On a serious note.. I just don’t have the voice for it. Now Dom does.. (cheering) but he won’t do it because he’s a big baby.

D: I am.

M: I think the musical number, would be like.. Alec would be the one that’s like (“singing” deadpan) ‘Alec’s at work, ta ta ta ta ta’ and then Jace would come in and be all heroic and all that.. you know Gaston? Yeah? And you know… erm… What’s that.. from the Disney songs? From the Disney movies?

D: I don’t know!

M (to audience): Who would Alec be from those Disney movies?

Audience: Prince Charming!

M: When was Prince Charming a grump??

Audience: Snow White

D: (laughing) Snow White!

M: Maybe in episode three… hang on, who’s the one that fell asleep?

D: Who’s the one that fell asleep?? It’s Sleeping Beauty Matt…

M: I haven’t read these in the last two weeks…

D: Oh wow..

M: We haven’t answered your question but I assure you it would be awesome and make a billion dollars!

D: They were talking about doing a musical episode for a while and I said the only way that I would do it, is if Matt sings… so we didn’t do it.

What kind of advice would you give to your character?

D: To our characters? So much! Stop dying Jace! Honestly, it just causes problems for everyone! You die and then your possessed and then a bunch of other people die and then Clary dies.. Yeah! She’s not in 3b folks. Kat’s not here to dispute it!

M: Yeah, Clary dies in 03×11..

D: Slams into the middle of New York. The explosion send her straight up and first scene… aaaah BAM!

Which is the easiest and hardest Malec scenes to film?

M: The hard ones are the ones where one of the actors has to break. There’s a scene.. oh shit..

D: NO! It hasn’t happened yet. I know exactly what you’re talking about. Don’t!

M: Okay. There’s a scene that was extremely difficult to film for one of the two of us and it was very impressive, because you spend a lot of time, over and over again, and crying and what not. And then you turn around. And there’s more crying. And you turn around, you do it again. When I say turn around, I mean they turn the cameras around.

D: Yeah, they don’t film you like this (gets up to rotate on the spot)

M: They… they don’t do that.

M: The easiest ones are the fun ones because Harry’s very good at banter and fast paced dialogue and we have a lot of fun with that and it’s a lot quicker and easier. And there’s one scene in particular where you’re all going to say ‘that must have been a lot of work for old Matt’. It’s possible. You’ll see. Oh you’ll see!

If you could pair up two people in the show, who would it be?

D: Alright! That’s new. We’ve never had that question before…

M: This is something you’ve thought about before. You’ve spent some time…

D: Wait! Time out! Who’s currently not dating??

M: We look at the web, and we assume that everybody who has smooched, one way or another, wink wink, and you create kind of a weird system. And I think that currently we have people that are stuck with certain people that we like to see together, so if I was going to make anybody… I would take Raj (laughter) and I would take.. do you remember that demon from the sewer? The little cute one, that attacked me, with the thing (slicing motion) was that a Ravener demon?

D: yeah yeah, with the thing (mouth tentacles)

M: oh! Yeah, sure, why not him! They would be a great pairing. They would go on several dates, I mean at first it would be kind of will they, won’t they. And then after a while…

D: Got a whole Ross Rachel thing going on

M: Absolutely! I think it would take 6 to 10 episodes, they would work through things, work through some trouble..

D: Why can’t they just get it together?? … in the end, they have to get it together. Poor Raj could really do with some happiness.

M: Some true love

D: Poor Raj…

We all know that in the books Alec and Magnus have a baby.

M: In episode 03×16 Alec and Magnus have their 8th baby. It was an accident but (…) there’s a lot of mouths to feed, so Alec takes a second job…

D: Power washing!

(cheering)

M: I don’t know how to top that?

M: And the babies work for him. There’s no child labour laws in Idris…

M: Sorry, what’s your actual question? How would Jace react to an Alec baby?

D: I feel like if you didn’t name it Jace, he’d be furious!

M: You only use a name of somebody who’s passed already!

D: I have! Twice!

(Audience in shock)

M: He doesn’t die a second time in any point in the show! He’s making this up!

D: Yeah, he’s right!

M: He’s trying to bamboozle you all!

D: Bamboozle! Name it bamboozle!

M: I’m naming my child bamboozle! Boo-boo! Boozle! Get in here and start power washing!

And with that, the panel came to an end. And what a note to end it on! Parabalaughs a plenty!

Pandemonium Con 1 – Welcoming Party – Quote Guessing Game

We were lucky enough to attend the Welcoming Party on Saturday morning, to kick off Pandemonium Con and after a crazy game of Jenga, the boys tried to tidy up the fallen pieces, however failed miserably and just threw all the bricks into a box.

Matt: “What tremendous fun that was! What’s the next game? Have you ever played Code Names before? That’s a great game, we should play that next!!”

Host: “So we have some lines here from the show, we read them out, you’re gonna have to guess who said it.”

Dom: “They have to guess?”

Host: “Yes, you read it out for them, they guess.”

Dom: “Oh, thank god. That’s alright then!”

Host: “You get it right, you go over there and you get a prize”

Matt: “What’s the price??”

Host isn’t entirely sure. Turns out to be notebooks they were selling in the merch store, which were super cute!

Isaiah: “I’m gonna do it in the character… (soft British accent) ‘There it is. The famous Morgenstern swagger. Wayland. Herondale. Lightwood. It’s hard to keep track..’”

After everyone stops laughing, Will and Matt conclude that the accent and voice was indeed very good, and Matt guesses Isabelle for laughs.

Fan: “Sebastian”

Dom is up next. He looks confused. Dom shows his quote to Matt.

Matt: “That isn’t on the show! That’s ridiculous!”

Dom: “This hasn’t been said EVER!”

Matt: “I don’t think so.. (gleeful) let’s find out!”

Dom: “First rule of Shadowhunting: When something explodes just keep walking. Never think twice. Never look away. PS: Never been said on the show!”

Fan: “Alec.”

Dom: “No.”

Fan: “Dominic?”

Dom: “Who uis Jace, yes. Never been said.”

Discussion over explosions and walking starts. Matt takes the card from Dom and debates the quote. He is very unhappy about the logic, saying it makes no sense to not look away AND to keep walking. Dom explains that you’re walking away from the explosion. Matt says “But never think twice, don’t look away… if I don’t look away, and keep walking..”

Matt gets up to act it out, looking behind himself at the explosion and walking forwards, promptly tripping off the stage, but smoothly catches himself and continues as if nothing happened “That’s a bad first rule…”

Dom: “There were so many first rules…”

Will starts a quote, in a soft, female voice, but before he gets more than two words in, everyone laughs. Dom interrupts, saying “Don’t do that!”

Will starts again, everyone laughs.

Will starts again. “It’s like my brain is telling me to do one thing and my heart another.”

Fan: “Clary.”

Matt is up.

Matt: “Whoever puts their hand up first I’m pointing at you. Impossible just means try again.”

Fan: “Alec”

Matt: “Boom there we go. What are the odds? That’s the one that people actually ask me to write down all the time.”

Isaiah is up.

Isaiah: “Together we can restore my family name and keep the institute.”

Dom: “I don’t remember this one either!”

Matt: (pouting) “I’m not reading that quote.”

Matt gives his card to Dom

Dom: “I see Isabelle is the smart one in the family..”

Fan: “Magnus?”

Dom: “Nope”

Fan: “Alec?”

Dom: “Nope”

Matt: (catching on to what the fan just said) “Why would Alec say this??”

Fan: “Meliorn!”

Dom: “Yes!”

Will: “If I listened to my heart, I would never be able to do my job.”

Clary. Nope.

Alec. Nope.

Matt: (pointing at fan who’s out of her chair, waving) “Ok, you seem super enthusiastic!!”

Fan: “Magnus”

Dom: “Nope”

Fan: “Jace.”

YES!

Isaiah: “Emotions are nothing but a distraction, You are ruled by them.”

Fan: “Alec”

Matt: “Yes! That’s a perfect Alec line…” (pauses, then mumbling) “He is such a dumb dumb.”

Dom doesn’t remember another line.

Matt: “Don’t worry. It was early on. And this isn’t your line..”

Dom: “Yeah but… They still gave me all the scripts, right?”

Dom: “Emotions are never black and white, they are more like a symptom”

Fan: (instantly) “Magnus!”

Isaiah: “Ok, from now we will need episode number and name…”

Will (in an urgent, British Aristocrat voice) “Save your worries for the mundanes! Everybody has a sad song!” continuing “And that’s how it was delivered as well.”

Fan: “Jace in the City of Bones”

Dom: “Yes. Wow. Well done. I am sure that’s not in the show! Especially if I delivered it like that!” (laughter) “In that British accent you always do, (‘fake’ British) ‘Everybody has a sad song’ rather than just talk the way I actually talk.”

Matt does the last card.

Dom: “Oh, I actually remember this one!!!”

(everybody cheers!)

Matt: “Let’s just keep playing games! All weekend long!”

Pandemonium Con 1 –Welcoming Party – Jenga

We were lucky enough to attend the Welcoming Party on Saturday morning, to kick off Pandemonium Con.

This had been advertised as a relaxed party in which the Shadowhunters cast and fans would play games, and it all kicked off with a not in any way relaxing game of Jenga…

Host: “So we’re gonna play Jenga, with a twist…”

Matt complains that “Jenga takes an enormous amount of time. We might as well be playing Settlers of Catan!”

Matt is also unhappy that it’s them, playing a game of Jenga on stage, rather than there being multiple games happening at once, that everyone could play and join in with, however it is quickly revealed that fan participation isn’t just encouraged, but in fact unavoidable.

Dom: “Ooooh, I see what’s going on here!”

All Jenga blocks have stickers with initials on them, and the game rules are that you remove the block of the person you want to go next, and therefore the person that’s most likely going to lose the game.

Host: “So the way it works, imagine that I want Dom to loose…” Dom looks offended.

Matt: “So if all the fan pieces are gone, do the fans loose?”

Host: “Well, the pieces are in rows, so there’s three of each, in each layer, so that’s not really going to happen, is it?”

Matt: “I don’t know! You don’t know how good we are!”

Dom choses a ‘Matt’ piece.

Matt: “Am I getting targeted? Well, this one is mine! So I’m winning!”

Matt puts the piece with his name on it on the table in front of him and instantly gets heckled by the audience.

Audience: “Aren’t you going to put it on top??”

Matt: “Oh, is that how we’re doing it? Alright…”

Will goes next and also takes a Matt piece.

Host: “Well, hopefully the next person won’t chose you again.”

Matt: “But it doesn’t matter, because ultimately the tower will still be full of names, because the person whose pieces you’ve taken are just on top of the tower, so no one is losing…”

Host and Matt argue and Matt eventually gives up, trying to explain what he means and goes “oh alright, whatever”

Will freaks everyone out, by shaking the tower, but removes the Matt piece, then tries to put it on top

Will: “This bit… I’ve had a lot of coffee, so this is the hard bit!”

Matt’s turn.

Matt: “Ok, I’m gonna get rid one of these fan ones. Does that mean a fan comes up next, yeah? Good! How does it work? Can I use two hands? Can I just do whatever I want?”

Matt is clearly distressed by the lack of rules.

Host: “You can use as many hands as you want!”

Matt manages to remove the fan piece. Fan comes up on stage.

Host: “Who is you want to lose?”

Dom: “No pressure! You didn’t think it all the way through when you volunteered, did you?”

They realise they are playing the game wrong.

Matt: “We were just going down the line…”

Fan removes Matt’s piece, so Matt has to go again, now that everyone has understood the rules.

Matt: “Okay, I’m just gonna go twice now!” (chooses his own piece)

Host: “But if you push your piece out, you have to go again. Why do you want to do that?”

Matt: “If I get all my pieces on top, then I don’t have to go again later!”

Host: “I kind of want him to lose now”

Dom: “Yeah, I know”

Matt removes Dom’s piece, so Dom has to go next. He starts. The tower wobbles. Everyone yells and screams.

Dom: “I got this, okay?”

Isaiah: “Noooooo… Nooooooo…”

Audience: “Pressure! Pressure”

Dom get his piece out. It’s a fan.

Fan comes on stage.

Dom: “Round of applause for her!”

Host: “Choose who you want to loose. And yes, you can pick a fan if you want if you don’t want them to lose. You’re really nice. I still kind of want Dom to loose”

Dom: “With those skills? Right..”

Fan removes a piece. It’s Dom’s, so he has to go again.

Matt starts straightening the tower, after it wobbles from floor vibrations, when the fan leaves the stage.

Dom: “WHAT ARE YOU DOING??”

Matt: “I’m making it more even!”

Isaiah: “Slooooooooowly… sloooooowly..”

Dom removes a piece. It’s Matt’s, so Matt goes to look at the tower, clearly aiming for another Dom piece.

Isaiah: “It’s not even personal anymore at this point..”

Matt: “Now it’s just about survival! It’s not about targeting any individual…”

Dom: “But these ones all have my name on them. And then I have to go again! How do you not understand the game??”

Matt takes Dom’s piece out. Dom goes again. Touches a piece, then moves as if to chose a different one

Matt: “No! You can’t change your answer! You have to remove that piece!”

Lots of suspense. Dom nudges and pushes but the tower wobbles.

Matt: “No, no no no. Go to the other side! Do from over there!”

Dom stops and turns on Matt

Dom: “Listen MATE..”

Dom launches himself at Matt and pulls Matt’s hood over his head. Lots of laughter.

Dom goes back to the tower, glances up at Isaiah, who is staring with a worried look on his face.

Dom: “That face isn’t helping, Isaiah!”

Dom turns back to tower, takes a deep breath.

Dom: “I’m shaking…”

Matt: “Alright baby! Come on! You can do it!”

Dom casually whips out his Jenga piece. It goes flying across the stage. When Dom finds it again, it turns out to be another fan.

Fan comes up, then turns to audience, asking: “Who should I pick?”

Dom: “No no. No audience conferring!”

Fan: “What’s the aim of the game?” (laughter)

Matt: “Remove that piece there very delicately. Wobble it around a bit..”

Dom: “Don’t listen to Matt!”

Matt: “Yeah, I don’t want to put you off. Get on that side.”

Fan: “No but… seriously, what’s the aim of the game?”

Host: “Well, Isaiah’s not done anything, so maybe you should pick him? Or a fan?”

Fan: “I don’t want us to loose!”

Dom: “You do whatever you want, but you should pick that piece right there. I mean, you do what you like. But that one. Right there. Just that one.. you know.. what does it say on the front? Oh, ‘fan’. Fancy that.”

Matt: “Kid, you’ve got it. I believe in you!”

Matt starts humming the jaws theme tune..

Matt: “You all seen Jaws? That movie has a big old shark in it..”

Fan keeps trying to get the piece out. Lots of oohs and aahs from cast.

Matt: “She’s shaking”

Dom: “You got it! You got it!”

Matt: “No way!”

Fan gets her piece out. It’s Isaiah.

Isaiah: “That was amazing”

Matt: “Oh my. Oh my my my…”

Audience wants to know what happens to the looser of the game.

Host: “The looser has to do an imitation of one of these guys..”

(Oooooooh…)

Matt starts humming Old Lang Syne. We think he was aiming for more of the Jaws theme tune and missed, but who knows with Matt.

Isaiah gets his piece out. It’s Matt.

Isaiah: “I’m sorry.”

Matt: “Old Matt.. Alright, let’s do this thing.”

Isaiah wobbles the stage walking back to his seat. Matt backs off from the tower until Isaiah sits down. When Matt goes to lean towards the tower again, Isaiah gets back up going ‘oh, let me just’ and wobbles the stage some more, stomping around. Then he sits down.

Matt touches a piece

Matt: “Nope.” (He doesn’t want to tale that one out, as it’s difficult.

Dom: “No no no, if you’ve touched it.. you don’t get to change the rules in the middle of the game. I had to ninja my one out.”

Matt concedes and returns to the piece he previously touched. Matt whips his piece out and it goes flying across half the stage, as Dom’s did, earlier.

Matt: “Where did it go? This is now stressful!”

Will: “What I’m doing here is I’m testing the friction of the table..” chosing from the lowest tier.

Matt: “Oh, the bottom ones!”

Clearly this had not occurred to Matt. Will tries to slide one of the bottom pieces out and tower wobbles.

OOOOOOH.

Will: “Ok, ok, hold on, Turns out, it’s a load bearing brick! Maybe if I do it from this side..”

More wobbling

Matt/Dom: “Oh my god, oh my god…”

Isaiah: “No, no.. no… no..”

Will gets his piece out. It’s a fan.

Host: “Ok, who wants to loose?”

Fan comes up

Isaiah: “What is your name?”

Fan: “Hannah”

Isaiah: “Hannah? Good night, Hannah.”

(Laughter)

Hannah casually gets her piece out. Cheering. It’s another fan.

Matt: “She’s never played this game before..”

Next fan comes up.

Matt: “Your whole life comes down to this moment right now. Everything you’ve ever done.”

She touches a piece. It’s not a good piece.

Dom: “Oh gosh.. oh gosh..”

Matt: “Now she’s stuck with it. She has to do this one.”

Tower wobbles.

Dom: “Oh gosh…”

Ooooohs and aaaaaahs

Matt: “This is so much pressure…. You got it! You got it! You got it! Stay calm!”

Matt tries to help by putting his hands on the fan’s back. Somehow we didn’t feel that this was going to help in keeping her calm…

Will: “Absolute silence in the room please.”

Room goes quiet. Fan pulls on the piece, tower wobbles dramatically. Shouting from the audience.

Matt: “Oh my god. Oh my god.”

Tower falls.

Host: “Unfortunately you have to imitate someone from the cast.”

Fan refuses.

Host: “If you don’t I’ll kick you out of the convention centre.”

Matt/Dom/Will/Isaiah: “NOOOOOO”

Dom: (gesticulating wildly) “Matt’s an easy one though, just do this with your hands”

Matt looks offended.

Matt gesticulates and shouts “What? JENGA?”

(laughter)

Matt: “This is like the ultimate level of stage freight. You’re allowed to make fun of us, we really don’t mind.”

Fan: (in Matt voice) “Oh Jenga!”

Laughter and cheering

Dom: “Very good.”

Matt: “That IS what I sound like”

And that concluded the Jenga game.

Quotes that are tDiE for

Quotes that are tDiE for is a game we are introducing for the start of Season 3 of Shadowhunters. Any of our listeners can join at any point! Don’t feel like you are ever late to the party!

The Rules

Anyone joining the game will get a collection card on which you battle six demons that are attacking New York. The cards will be displayed here at all times, so you can always keep track of your card!

Ruth and Michelle will pick their favourite quote of each current episode (one each, no choosing the same quote) and you can write in and guess as to what quotes we have picked. You get 2 guesses per write in and all write ins must be with us by midnight on Monday (EST) before the next episode airs on Tuesday. We will reveal our chosen quotes, announce the winners and read out all other suggested best quotes at the beginning of our next podcast episode.

You can contact us using Asks or Messages on tumblrtweet us using #QuotetDiE or write in via the Contact Us on the website.

The Goal

If you guess one or both of our quotes correctly, you collect rune(s) on your card to battle the demons. The goal is to defeat all 6 demons! Across each half season there are 20 possible runes to be collected, 40 runes across the entirety of Season 3. May the odds be ever in your favour… hang on, wrong fandom. Nevermind. If you fill up your card, you can of course start a new one straight away.

The Prize

Anyone who has successfully saved New York from the demon invasion will get a piece of art done for them in the tDiE style. This can be of a character from Shadowhunters, yourself if you wish to use them as icons the way we use ours, your pets, or of anyone else! All you need to do is provide us with a chosen character/person or 2-3 photographs.

NYC Trip – Shadowhunters/The Mortal Instruments Part 2

Here’s some links for your reference:

1) The freeform ‘Map The Shadows!’ web page.

2) The map that Cassandra Clare shared on MortalInstruments.com (this correlates with the map in the begining of the UK Walker Books edition of the TMI series (0781406307627 – ISBN for CoB)

3) Our compiled google map with all the locations from the above maps.

Some things to bear in mind.

  • The blobs on the TMI map are rather large, covering a couple of blocks that are not marked specifically.
  • The points on the show map on the other hand are quite specific but on a map with most of the street markings removed. Also the markings, we strongly suspect after having done our journey, are not supposed to indicate the specific spot in terms of exact distance down exact street.
  • The show map is Season 1 specific – there is new info in regards to both Magnus’s loft and the Institute provided in season 2 which are reflected in the photos but not on the maps.
  • Bearing the above in mind we visited the destinations as close to the exact marking as possible, and then found the most appropriate site at that location.
  • Finally we had a bit of a technical calamity with a loss of some of the photos, we have therefore supplemented with some photos from google maps.

5. Pandemonium

The locations of the show and book Pandemonium are very different, the books locate Pandemonium right in the middle of downtown Manhattan; Pandemonium on the show has been moved far closer to Magnus’s apartment in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

Show:

Description from the Shadowhunter wikia:

Pandemonium is a nightclub in the Williamsburg neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York that is run by Magnus Bane.

The club caters to both mundanes and Downworlders, and is a place where demons sometimes came to victimize the mundane patrons.

The club boasts an impressive dance floor, the latest EDM music, a bar, and a VIP section for clubbers seeking a more intimate experience, which is mostly for members of the Shadow World seeking relief from the mundane clubbers. The bar’s menu includes a range of drinks and bites to suit any creature’s appetite.

We were a little disappointed not to find any clubs at all around 2nd street and Marcy avenue – the area generally seems to be mostly coffee shops and bars. It is pretty much on the Brooklyn Queens Express way, which does add a sort of industrial grittiness to the area that felt quite appropriate for a nightclub like Pandemonium. We did find a lot of graffiti-ed buildings with industrial shutters, which inspired us a little.

Book:

Description from the Shadowhunters wikia:

The Pandemonium Club is an all-ages nightclub in New York. It was a place where Downworlders and mundanes mingle. Shadowhunters also come to catch demons that sneak their way into the club. Jocelyn told Clary that she never wanted her to go there because Shadowhunters often went there to catch demons. As it happened, this was where Clary met Jace, Isabelle, and Alec Lightwood for first time, and, according to Simon, is the place that changed her.

Judging by the location, the Pandemonium of the books is a very different place to the Pandemonium of the show. Here’s a club we found at about the right spot somewhere in the vicinity of Park avenue and 14th street.

6. The Jade Wolf

The Jade Wolf is a Chinese restaurant located on the remote docks of Red Hook that doubles as the New York werewolf pack’s headquarters. The location of the restaurant is obscure enough that few mundanes frequent it to dine, allowing Shadow World affairs to occur and be conducted with little risk of discovery. The bulk of their business comes from making food deliveries, with moo shu pork being their most popular item.

Confession. This was the only location we did not manage to visit. We found the spot on the map and below you see a googlemap screen grab, but time did not allow us to go so far for just the one map point. As you can see from the below shot, the show has managed to capture the look of the Red Hook docks amazingly successfully, it does look like exactly the sort of place that a dive restaurant that no one visits might somehow exist.

Book:

Description from the Shadowhunters wikia:

The Jade Wolf restaurant is the glamoured form of the New York werewolf pack’s headquarters. In fact an old, abandoned police station, specifically the Second Precinct building of the NYPD, in Chinatown, it appears like a takeout-only restaurant that serves Chinese cuisine. While it is only a cover for mundane eyes, the werewolves who reside here occasionally take calls and actually deliver Chinese food orders to customers.

The book’s jade wolf is located uin the heart of China town, where (shockingly!!) there is no shortage of Chinese restaurants. We were particularly taken with the Golden Jade jewellery store which happened to be behind a police cordon, and the Wong Kee restaurant pictured below.

7. Magnus’s Loft

While the High Warlock of Brooklyn resides, as appropriate, in Brooklyn in all versions of the story, his address changes quite dramatically, from Greenpoint in the book to Brooklyn Heights on the show.

Show:

Description from the Shadowhunter wikia:

Magnus’s apartment is the home of the High Warlock of Brooklyn, Magnus Bane.

In the show, Magnus’s apartment in the show is shown to be a short way down the street from High Street – Brooklyn Bridge Station. The view from Magnus’s balcony however suggests that the loft is closer to the river than that, and actaully appears to be looking at the bridge from the other side (the right side, rather than the left if you’re facing toward Manhattan). We saved this one for last – it was night-time proper when we made it to the Brooklyn Bridge, and we walked around alot before we turned a corner and found as perfect a apartment building as we could hope to find.

Book:

Description from the Shadowhunters wikia:

Magnus’s apartment is the home of the High Warlock of Brooklyn, Magnus Bane, and his family. It is located in Greenpoint.
Magnus’s apartment was a walk-up, in a building in an industrial neighborhood that has been converted to an apartment building. The building’s interior was poorly maintained, with its dirty and rickety staircases. His loft, however, was well-maintained and huge. It had a living room, a master bedroom, and three spare bedrooms. Magnus often redecorated drastically.

8. The Entrance to the City of Bones

The City of Bones, also known as the Silent City, is the residence of the Silent Brothers. It also serves as the final resting place for some of the fallen Shadowhunters. The City can be reached through a number of entrances. One entrance in New York is found under an overpass of FDR Drive. Another in New York is considered the Downworlders entrance, and one other is found in a cemetery.

The show depicts entrance of the City of Bones under FDR Drive, it’s gritty and very industrial. We did not see that there!

Book:Description from the Shadowhunters wikia:

The Silent City is rightfully named residence of the Silent Brothers. It also serves as the final resting place for some of the fallen Shadowhunters.

There’s no specific location for the book entrance to the Silent City, but by all accounts there are entrances all over the place…

Come back and see part three for (9) Hardtail, (10) 2nd Precinct (Closest New York City Police Department – 5th Precinct. 2nd Precinct in Yonkers), (11) Luke’s book store (12) 89th Precinct (Closest New York City Police Department to map mark is 94th Precinct)
